We found Tex Mex!! I'm not sure why this place has low stars. But, let me assure you that this place is legit! We moved here from Dallas in May and have been trying places to find some comfort food. The Texas Margarita, queso (cheese dip) and chicken enchilada with verde sauce made this Texas girl a little less homesick! The service was fast and friendly, thanks Sal! A must try and worthy of more than 3 stars!!! Better than Rojo, Fiesta Fajita and that terrible joint in Walled Lake.

Love. I'm in love with this place. I've recently discovered the fried burritos and they are awesome. Both the chicken and beef. We've tried a few of the shrimp dishes as well lately and they are fantastic. Recently took an order of chips and salsa to go for a late night snack and was not disappointed. I'd eat here three times a week if my husband would let me!

Geat food, but some of the worst service you will find. It is unfortunate as it is a mix of good severs and terrible ones. You roll your dice to see what you get. We went there 20+ times (because of the food), but enough is enough! ! Never again

The ground beef tacos are lacking flavor. There is no seasoning on them anywhere. The number 10 lunch combo was not bad and for 6.99 I can't complain. The chips and salad they give you at the table is also lacking flavor. The chips don't taste fresh and the salsa is bland. I think there afraid of salt here.

We saw a couple of coupons in the local monthly savers, so we thought we would give it a try. But we wish we had gone back to the regular place. The Grand Azteca is full of activity and noisy. They have a live band and they really get into singing happy birthday - they ring the bell. So there is a great atmosphere, and plenty of Mexican mementos on the wall, but you probably not coming here for the food. Oh they have a large menu and lots of Cervesa and Margaritas, but the food is the McDonaldization of Mexican food. All the combination plates are ground beef and if you want chicken is costs more, and if you don't want any meat, well don't pick a combination plate. Service is fast, but unattentive.

Yum! A family favorite for sure! Delicious Mexican food, nice decor, all around a good place!

To call this authentic Mexican food is an insult to Mexican food. I don't quite understand what the previous 5 star reviewer ate. The ingredients tasted of poor quality. The wife and I ordered a cheese quesadilla as an appetizer (since the only appetizer they offer as such are various takes on nachos). Soon arrived an unimpressive lone quesadilla on a plate. The cheese tasted awful. I suspect it was processed and fake. Imagine a tortilla and kraft singles. The dinner, combo #11, was very soggy and slathered in a terrible red enchilada sauce. Tasted canned. Nothing seemed fresh or made to order. The next day my stomach agreed with my initial assessment of bad food. Wife felt the same way. Should consider renaming the place Grand Ass-wreck-a.

We are not Mexican food specialists by any means, but enjoy an occasional Mexican meal. Several of our friends had recommended this place so we tried it out. The menu is huge with much selection. We ordered fajita for two, and a sampler platter to feed 3 adults and 2 kids. There was a ton of food! The food was generally good. The rice was a little salty. The beans were great. The ground beef in the burritos was not to my liking, but others in my group liked it. The fajitas were a little different, but tasty. The taco was great. My kids liked their chicken burritos too. Why 3 stars? The service was terrible. Our waiter appeared very stressed and distracted. Something must have been going on because he wasn't paying attention and seemed annoyed by our questions. It was difficult to pin him down to get our order in. Our order came out correctly ( I think) though. The restaurant was not busy either. We will probably be back, just not often, as we don't eat Mexican very often anyways.

Really bad food. Portions are ridiculously small and the prices are INSANE for what you get. Ordered a taco salad for almost $10 and got a teeny, tiny little thing that was basically just refried beans and a bit of lettuce that turned into complete mush when mixed. My hubby ordered a combo plate and it was just complete mush with no flavor, everything tasted canned or prefab'ed. The kids meals look like something you'd get at a fast food restaurant, and all the condiments come in packets (ketchup, ranch, etc). The margarita was okay, I guess, and our waitress was nice, but we will not be returning. If you're going to serve god-awful tex-mex mush, at least lower your prices!

I like this place: First off, the server we had was on top of his game. We never had to wait for anything. We ate the 1st basket of chips, and he kindly brought out a new basket for us. I read some other reviews...expensive? I don't think so...for a full course meal with some of the most expensive items on their menu and it was only $39 for 3 people. We got their smoothie...wow....loved it. The fajitas are the best I've had in Detroit and maybe Mexico. (it's been a few years). So we got this fajita that had shrimp, steak bits, chorizo sausage, green peppers, and some light hamburger. It was fantastic...I've had it here twice now. We also got the tacos' again delish. When you order the beer, they have these 30 oz mugs that are frosted...keeps your beer nice and cold. Interior decorating is a smash! Love what they did! We are foodies, our other regular spots are What's Crepe, Uptown Grill Commerce, and Toasted oak. We are glad to have this restaurant in our home town.

Decent Mexican considering the choices for this type of cuisine in this area are limited. The decor is colorful and festive (which my wife noticed and cheers her spirits). I had an excellent tostada and taco with really good shredded chihuahua cheese which, yes, is the type of cheese used in authentic Mexican. She had the enchilada and taco which she liked. Not 5 stars since I think paying $2.30 per Pepsi is extreme -$4.60 for both of us in drinks is where they gotcha. We will be back!!!!

This place can be summed up in one word : meh. When you first walk in the decor is overwhelmingly garish. The service was good mostly but the food was underwhelming. The chips tasted store bought and came with salsa and what tastes like a sweet/spicy ranch but no one told us what it was. My dad ordered the chimichangas and asked what kind of sauce came on top because he had it before and described it as nauseating. Nacho cheese was the answer. They put nacho cheese on top of the chimichangas. Why does an "authentic" Mexican place even have nacho cheese??? My mom got tacos and they were fine. I got chicken fajitas and they were fine. It came with guacamole that was extremely smooth like it was made in a blender. Maybe some people like that but I didn't enjoy it. Again, the whole experience can be summed up with a "meh".

The food was not good. The servers didn't seem like they were happy to be there. My Husband say Taco Bell is better than them. The chips were a bit stale and the two salsas/sauces that were brought out were terrible. One was a mystery white sauce and the other was a bad tomato salsa. I know some store brought salsa thats more fresh than that salsa (Garden Fresh). There were three of us that ordered food. I tried all three dishes and everything tasted the same. It just wasn't good. One of the worst places I've been to. Save yourself the time & money and go to El Nibble Nook a mile or two down the street north. Wayyy better.

Been there twice now. Service is very quick, seating is always available. They serve a salsa blanco with their chips & salsa. Like a sweet ranch. (Not my taste). Their queso is just right for the kids - white cheese sauce with a little hint of spice. The food is nothing too fancy. All the regulars. Texas margarita was served strong. When we pointed out that our jumbo margarita had a crack in the glass, they replaced the drink & gave us another free for the inconvenience. They do tend to disappear at the end of the meal when it is time for the check, but I think they are expecting us to stay & chat a bit. Decor is ok. Big TV's to watch the game. I'm sure we'll be going back.

Seriously the worst Mexican food I've ever had, and I've had a lot of bad Mexican, so that is saying a lot. Writing my first Yelp review to warn others because the food was just that bad... Let's start with the chips and salsa: Chips were hard, overcooked, and unseasoned. They brought out two dips - an obvious jar/canned salsa that had a ketchupy aftertaste and a white dip that tasted suspiciously like Kraft Ranch mixed with Cholula. Gross... see photo. We also ordered the appetizer guacamole and it did not taste fresh. It was abnormally green and citrusy, no onion or tomato mixed in, reminded me of the prepackaged guacamole they sell at grocery stores. I ordered combo #16: Chalupa, Chile Relleno, and Enchilada.. Everything was soggy as it was drenched in red enchilada sauce that actually tasted very Italian, not Mexican (think tomato sauce with way too much cumin). "Slop" is a good word for it. The Chile Relleno was not the usual poblano pepper, but a small, soggy, non-spicy pepper. The cheese covering the Chili Relleno and Enchilada was the greasiest, runniest, slop cheese I've ever encountered. Runny and greasy, yet extremely rubbery when chewing. I love cheese and honestly felt like I could give it up forever after eating this, it was actually nauseatingly bad. The "chalupa" (bean tostada) wasn't good either, completely soggy. The husband ordered a similar combo and was equally unimpressed. His rice was bland and unseasoned and so was the meat. Everything also dosed in the rubber cheese and spaghetti sauce. Very poor quality of ingredients used - they obviously use the cheapest possible cheese and prepackaged salsa they could find. Nothing tasted at all fresh. Ironic because you can tell that a fortune was spent on the decor; custom painted chairs and booths. The custom upholstered booths were actually very hard and uncomfortable as they lacked padding. They also cheaped out on silverware, the was no serration on the knives, making it very difficult to cut through the rubberized cheese. We picked at our food and tried our best to eat it because we were hungry and don't like to waste food, but it was so disgusting we just couldn't eat it. Small guacamole, 2 combos, and 4 coronas came to $42 before tip (and after the coupon!) - and we left hungry - then drove to taco bell to get some non-greasy tacos. Sad when Taco Bell is better than an actual Mexican Restaurant. One star because the service was good, the waiter was friendly and attentive and they do serve alcohol - our bottled Coronas were they only thing we enjoyed about the experience. Very poor quality food. Don't waste your money!

I was stuck between 3 and 4 stars, would have gone 3.5 if possible. Been here a couple times. The food is good...not great, but good and fresh. If you need your waiter, it can be tough flagging him down. The tacos are very different then most, but I though they were good. They are beef, lettuce and white cheese. They have fish tacos (were pretty good) and seafood options. I won't dream about the place, but I will eat here again. If your in the area and want Mexican, this place can fit the bill.

I always enjoy this place! It's bright and festive. The food is good I usually get the enchiladas verde, they are very good. Probably the best I've had. The top shelf margarita is excellent! I love the beer in the frosted mugs it's fantastic! My family and I go at least twice a month. The service is usually very good. Sometimes the person doesn't speak a lot of English and it's good to practice our Spanish as we go to Mexico once a year! We usually have two toddlers with us and are always treated well!

Delicious! I went here last night in celebration of Cinco Del Mayo and the restaurant was packed! The music was pumping and the customer service was still on key. The staff fabulous, friendly and accommodating. We ordered chips and salsa and i love it because the chips were hot hot hot. Nothing is worse when the chips come out cold. At Grand Azteca they bring hot chips with 3 different kinds of salsa. I also ordered chicken and steak fajitas which were seasoned very nice. Great bar here with very strong drinks. Margaritas galore! You can't taste the alcohol but let me tell you it is there and it will creep up on you.

Ate here on a Saturday night and it was GREAT! Service was excellent and the band was playing relaxing vibes all night. I recommend trading out the tequila in the regular drinks for something higher end. This will ensure the proper strength. Large menu has just about something for everyone. Overall a very good Mexican restaurant which was badly needed in our area, since El Nibble has gone downhill.

Not sure what passes as food here. Had the #32 Chicken Tamales. Had no taste, the food was definitely reheated. The only saving grace was that we had a coupon. Will never return. Place will probably close in 1-2 months if they're lucky.

Won't bother with this place again. The service was OK, but the food -- I could make better at home. Seem like rookies at running a restaurant..

not very good, i understand they just opened, but they have other locations and should have it down by now, the margurita was not good at all, for a mexican restaurant should have been better, the inside was like you were inside a mexican village, overdesigned if you ask me, the bar was to tall, felt odd to try to eat at, the food was only ok, baja freash is wayyyy better,

This place sucks. They served us rotten tomatoes on top of our food.... And my wife had hair in her food. The chips were stale and the pop was flat..honestly the worst place I've ever eaten at. Makes me want to throw up....just thinking about Azteca. Blah

Terrible rotten service with an attitude. Food was good but slow, rude, disorganized. Wrong orders given. Waited 10 minutes at bar for service while staff ignored us. Ordered drink them they disappeared for another 10 minutes. Got a table for 6 then waited again.... staff was unbelievably inept. Too bad...we wanted to like it.

Not completely awful... Some entrees are way too pre-cooked like the fajita steak dishes. Meat is like rubber. Service excellent, great entertainment. Large drinks. If you have time drive to southwest Detroit for a real taste of mexican.

Great service and the california burrito is awesome BUT the margaritas are so strong you cant even enjoy it. I dont want to be wasted after 1 small margarita other then that everythings great. I know some people will love the margarita tho. :-)

There is a really good variety in the vegetarian section of the menu and the ingredients seem to be a better quality then most places. My favorite is a platter with a potato enchilada, mushroom quesadilla and spinach burrito. I have never seen any of these items on other local menu's so I like being able to have something different. It is a bit on the pricey side in my opinion but they have coupons and I box the quesadilla and leftover chips and salsa to get a second meal out of it. It reheats really well in the microwave!

  • Justin W.

This place is on our "rotation" ever since they opened. The service is stupid fast. Food is on the table as soon as your done ordering. Which makes it nice if you're in a bit of a hurry (or just hungry). The food is great. Not too spicy (that's what the hot sauce on the table is for). My usual is the Burrito's Jalisco (sp). The wife usually gets the Taco Combination (forgot the #). The Chips are ok. The "Ranch" sauce is strange; we stay away from it. The large beer is 32oz; so be careful when the waiter asks what size you'd like.

We absolutely love this place. We've been here 4 or 5 times at this point and I'm feeling the urge to go again tonight (and its 7:45 AM). I try something new every time we go and have always been pleased. To date I've had the tacos, quesadillas, tostaguac, choristeak (unbelievable) and others I cant recall (I haven't finished my first cup of coffee yet). I know I've also had the flan, and again it was delicious. The only thing that I've been a bit disappointed in is the white sauce they bring out with the chips. I don't know what the heck that's supposed to be, but another Yelper likened it to ranch dressing with a splash of hot sauce, and that's a fairly accurate description. They serve up some HUGE beers and margaritas. I generally stick to beer, but my wife has enjoyed her mixed drinks as well. Give this place a shot, I'm surprised at all the awful reviews these guys have gotten. The prices are about as low as you can expect without having to sacrifice in food quality or restaurant cleanliness.

The best authentic Mexican food in the area. I'm a Spanish teacher and have had much Mexican food--this is easily the best around. The service is phenomenal--fast, friendly, personable waitstaff. The mariachi every other Friday are so entertaining and friendly as well. I strongly recommend the molcajete.

Bland food that tastes like it's prefabricated and reheated. Taco Bell with seat-in service and beer. Service is OK.

Just ok. For me I won't return as El Nibble Nook is just a few hundred yards down the road. It has much better food and better service.

I've wanted to give this place a try since they opened recently, and did tonight. I looked at the reviews before going, and was surprised to see so many 5 star and 1 star reviews all together, so I decided to roll the dice and see which camp was right. Turns out the 1-2 star camp was. The décor inside is nice, and the service was prompt and courteous, but the food was just not very good. There is very little flavor, the salsa is from a can (or pail), as is the rice and beans, and probably the burrito, enchilada, and tacos. Too bad, I was really hoping to find something special, but this wasn't it.

    (2)
  • Kathy G.

The ambiance was nice but the food.... not. The vegetables tasted like they were pre-cooked and warmed up and I am burping up what tastes like old veggies. The refried beans were good though, should pass on the salsa (similar to tomatoe paste with a little hot sauce). Clearly not my fav mexican restaurant in the area.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
